New Narratives of American Judaism

Len Saxe

Saturday 2:15 PM–3:30 PM Room 208

Community, Culture, Social Justice

Despite concern that U.S. Jewry is “melting away” through assimilation and the impact of intermarriage, the number of Americans who claim Jewish identity is on the increase. The session will focus on the implications of the new narrative on the state of American Jewry.

Pursue Justice through Understanding and Practicing the Art of Resistance

Barry Bub

How to, Philosophy & Science, Social Justice

Is tolerance always desirable? Should there be a place in healthy society for intolerance and protest, for example when we encounter injustice? For Jews, historic victims of intolerance, this is a critical question. In this interactive presentation, which includes pertinent Jewish sources, we seek to answer this by taking a journey through Europe, seen through the lens of graffiti. We linger in Berlin, a hotspot for contemporary graffiti, before returning to Philadelphia, birthplace of modern graffiti and now the home of a successful Mural Arts program. We visit Occupy Wall Street, and our journey ends with some surprising conclusions.
