The Tradition of Disagreement in Biblical Prophets

Mark Leuchter

Friday 9:15 PM–10:30 PM Room 202

Jewish tradition generally regards the biblical prophets as a unified front, a group of spokesmen in ancient Israel who spoke the word of God to their audiences. But a closer look at the prophets themselves shows remarkable disagreement between them over what, exactly, constituted the "word of God" or what Israel's deity actually demanded from his people. The Bible preserves discrepancies, arguments, polemics and even personal attacks between the prophets of ancient Israel. This session will look at a few famous prophetic passages that will give us a sense of how diverse -- and divided -- the Israelite prophetic tradition really was.

Explorations in this Week's Torah Portion

Goldie Milgram

Friday 9:15 PM–10:30 PM Room 201

Torah

Rabbi Milgram's efforts to find a meaningful interpretation of this week's Torah portion, Tazria-Metzora, led her to meetings with Hebrew University's faculty in the History of Bible and Medicine. She went from there to England to meet with a monk who used to work in the Vatican Library, and then all the way to the Vatican Library itself to review ancient manuscripts. As a result, in this session we will unravel mysteries about symptoms shared by the the Prophetess Miriam, King Hezekiah, some members of the priesthood, and a house, as we immerse in a rewarding Torah study adventure in all four traditional dimensions -- physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual.
