Gary Frohlich

Gary Frohlich is a certified genetic counselor and has been working in this area for 35 years. He is the Patient Care Liaison with Genzyme Therapeutics in Los Angeles and is currently working with patients and families who are affected with the most common Ashkenazi Jewish disorder, Gaucher disease. He is in demand as a speaker and has talked at many Jewish genealogy conferences. He is a published author of both scientific articles and pamphlets on Ashkenazi Jewish Diseases.

Genealogy: “A record or table of the descent of a person, family, or group from an ancestor or ancestors”. How can you use your family tree to keep yourself and your children healthy? Many inhabitants of the shtetl were related to each other. In fact, 42% of modern Ashkenazi Jews are actually descended from only four women. Many Ashkenazim didn’t even have last names until the mid 1800s, when we were advised by Napoleon II and the King of Poland to take last names. Learn how some of those last names evolved. Do you know where your last name comes from? Who are the Ashkenazi Jews and what countries did they come from? Are there genetic differences between the Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews? This program is a biology lesson, a history lesson and a genetics primer.
