An Intro to Sephardic History and Culture Through Ladino Secular Folksongs

Sarah Aroeste

Arts & Performance, Global Culture & History, Interactive

Sarah Aroeste, inspired by her Sephardic roots from Spain and Greece, works to help bring Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) music back to life for a new generation. In her interactive workshops, Aroeste presents an introduction to Sephardic history and culture by examining a series of Ladino secular folksongs, rhythms, proverbs, and more to get a window into the rich vibrancy of Ladino music and culture through the ages and today.

Ladino chanteuse Sarah Aroeste, inspired by her Sephardic roots from Spain and Greece, works to bring Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) music to life for a new generation. Aroeste travels the globe fusing both original and 15th-century Ladino folk songs with contemporary influences such as rock, funk, jazz and blues. She has released two recordings, A la Una: In the Beginning and Puertas. In 2007 Aroeste began collaborating with Roberto Rodriguez, writing original, Cuban-inspired, Sephardic-themed songs. With her modern take, Aroeste presents a fresh, soulful new sound to Ladino and Sephardic music.
