How Do We Obtain Forgiveness on Yom Kippur?
The Machzor's Three Answers

Joseph Rosenstein

Ritual, Prayer & Spirituality

The machzor for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur offers different answers to the question of how we obtain God’s forgiveness. In this session, I will discuss three answers and how they are reflected in the liturgy. The session will conclude with a discussion of what to do about an anomalous answer—that offered by Un’taneh Tokef. Issues like this are raised in the presenter’s recently published "Machzor Eit Ratzon," a traditional yet nonconventional prayerbook. (See www.newsiddur.org).
