The Teachings of Gerson D. Cohen

A Grateful Student's Appreciation 20 Years Later

Jewish History, Sacred Text & Thought

Gerson Cohen was the fifth Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary: a rabbi, historian, elegant Hebraist and theologian. His scholarship had a range that was extraordinary and breathtaking, and although meticulously objective, was always directed toward important issues in Jewish and human life. Now, twenty years after his death, we will revisit the import of some of his scholarly papers and addresses, and examine the still-relevant theological concerns of his later years.

Law and Prophecy: A Persistent Jewish Tug-of-War

Sacred Text & Thought

Explore a particular type of tug-of-war which will seek to heighten awareness and stimulate thinking about the ways in which law and prophecy have served as different but intertwined paradigms throughout the history of Jewish theology and practice. Texts presented and discussed will range from Second Temple and Talmudic times through the Middle Ages, Hasidic literature and modern Jewish philosophy. Possible (and desirable) implications for our own time will be considered as well.
