Daniel Coleman

Chavruta II: Ahavat Yisreal

Have You Ever Quietly Hated Someone?

Sara Kranzler

Saturday 11:45 AM–1:00 PM CAFE CORNER LEFT

Ritual & Prayer, Torah & Text

Let your radical amazement continue to unfold as we tackle a new set of texts on the power of the mitzvah of ahavat yisrael (love for fellow Jews) as a tool for discovering pathways to peace and respect within, at home, at work, and within the Jewish people. Our studies today draw on Maimonides Laws of Temperament. Chevruta (partner study) is an empowering study form in which, no matter what your level of experience, your connection to the text will soar. Hebrew texts are also provided in English. **Please note that this session will run for 90 minutes.

Creating Ethical Workplaces

Jill Jacobs

Saturday 11:45 AM–1:00 PM Congressional Room 1

How-To, Identity & Responsibility

What makes a workplace Jewish? In this session, we will consider issues such as wages and hours, union relations, health and safety, and other areas of Jewish law and tradition regarding workplace conditions. We will also spend time thinking about how we can make our own workplaces more Jewish places, whether we are the owners or CEOs, or whether we are simply employees.

Different Quotes for Different Folks

Incorrect Bible Quotations in Rabbinic Literature

Avram Sand

Saturday 11:45 AM–1:00 PM Empire Corner

Advanced, Torah & Text

Variant Torah texts are found in the Septuagint, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the Talmud. Not only does Rabbinic literature quote verses that look different from the ones in our Torah, but it even quotes verses we wouldn't otherwise know existed! This session takes a look at how later Rabbinic sources have explained the deviations from the Torah that they recognized.

Ethical Norms as the Foundation of Torah

Ethan Tucker

Saturday 11:45 AM–1:00 PM LOBBY RIGHT NEXT TO SAFARI

Advanced, Torah & Text

Come learn a fascinating passage from Dor Revi'i, by R. Moshe Shmuel Glasner (19th-20th c., Hungary). R. Glasner spells out a bold theory of how Judaism ought to relate to modern values that stem from deep ethical impulses, albeit from outside Judaism. We will explore his text as a possible basis for rethinking the interrelationship of traditionally Jewish obligations with contemporary crusades for environmental and economic justice and the never-ending quest to secure human dignity for all.

Etz Chayyim He

"She" is a Tree of Life to Those that Hold "Her" Fast

Getzel Davis

Saturday 11:45 AM–1:00 PM Empire Room 3 North

Torah & Text

One of the most famous verses from Proverbs is perhaps one of the least understood. What is the ‘she’ that the verse refers to? Explicitly the text is speaking about ‘wisdom,’ but the rabbis have understood this to refer to the Torah (which is why we sing it so often). The other part of the verse is even more befuddling. What is the tree of life? Is it a reference to the Garden of Eden? An actual tree? What kind of tree? Come and hear about Jews, trees and our unfolding tradition.

Jacob's Risk and Israel's Reward

Leadership and Social Entrepreneurship in the Jewish Tradition

Ariel Beery

Saturday 11:45 AM–1:00 PM Embassy Room 1

Torah & Text

What is social entrepreneurship, and why are the Jews so enamored with the concept? From Abraham's wells to Moses' intervention, our leaders have taken great risks for social reward. What is it about our tradition that incentivizes action for the sake of the collective? What are the challenges this tradition presents? This workshop will explore the realm of social enterprise through core texts of the Jewish tradition, seeking to uncover the 'Jewish' in social entrepreneurship.

Kiddushin: Ownership or Partnership?

The Evolution of a Religious Instituion

Dov Linzer

Saturday 11:45 AM–1:00 PM Congressional Room 2

Torah & Text

Today, we view marriage as a partnership entered into by two equal parties. However, the traditional Jewish wedding ceremony—with only the groom giving a ring and making a declaration of marriage—may reflect a very different understanding. In this class we will ask: Did Biblical and Rabbinic Judaism view marriage as partnership or as ownership? How is this reflected in law, language, and ritual? And, finally, in what ways did this institution evolve over time, and where are we today?

Featured in this film is the gripping true story of Irene Hizme and her twin brother, Rene Slotkin, who were sent to Auschwitz at barely age six, among 3,000 twins subjected to Josef Mengele’s experiments in his quest to create a Master Aryan race. More than just a record of one of the Holocaust’s darkest chapters, the film is about love and courage, demons and saviors, the complexity of the human psyche, and how rare individuals are able to rise above inhumane circumstances with their emotional selves intact. **Please note, this is a film and a DVD player will be used in this session.

An Unexpectedly Modern Page of Talmud

Leah Rosenthal

Saturday 11:45 AM–1:00 PM Embassy Room 2

Advanced, Identity & Responsibility, Torah & Text

In this session we will study a section of the Talmud (Sotah 32a-b). Upon examination, we will discover that the Talmud, while pursuing its halachic (legal) questions, is actually exploring surprisingly contemporary issues of Jewish identity, ranging from the experience of multiculturalism to balancing the needs of the individual with the interests of the community.
