Traditional Egalitarian Shacharit Service

Coordinated by Ethan Tucker, a co-founder of Kehilat Hadar in Manhattan, this service will feature the spirit, depth, and energy characteristic of new spiritual communities across the country that are attracting young Jews in large numbers. The traditional egalitarian minyan will blend the traditional prayerbook with leadership and participation by both men and women to create a spirited prayer service. (Mixed gender seating)

Musical Instruments on Shabbat

How to Think About Halakhah (Jewish Law)

Ritual and Prayer, Text and Thought, University Student Recommended

In this session, we will look at the question of using musical instruments on Shabbat as a window into halakhic discourse. We will explore both the substance of the specific issue as well as the ways different sources use “halakhic language” to get at their divergent conclusions.

Gender and Prayer

Ritual and Prayer, Text and Thought, University Student Recommended

In this session we will explore the question of whether one’s gender affects one’s obligation to pray. Our discussion will inform possible approaches to the integration of egalitarianism and halakhic (Jewish legal) discourse, as well as create a deeper understanding of the obligation to pray in the first place.
