How to Play Your Drum and Shake Your Shaker

Technique Class

Arts and Performance

Learn how to play your djembe or dumbek from a professional. Beginners welcome. Explore basic rhythms, producing musical sounds on any drum, where to put accents that help a rhythm, and keeping a steady beat. If there is interest, techniques will be offered for tambourine, shaker and bells. Bring your stuff or borrow ours.

The Service of My Dreams

Playing with the music and meaning of Shabbat Beshalach

Aaron Freeman, Marge Eiseman, Jona Muchin, Akiva Wharton

Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream, and so do we! Join us for Shabbat like you’ve never experienced it before. We believe a good Shabbat service should welcome you in as an individual, give you a chance to be part of a group, and help you connect to the Divine and others in a deep way. With creative interplay of music, stories, movement, and environment, we will lead an exploration of Parshat Beshalach, “the dance party” of the moment of liberation! **Please note, this session will have mixed gender seating and musical instruments.

Everyone Welcome Drumming Circle

Jam Time!

Here’s your chance to learn absolutely nothing but have a blast! Bring your drum, your tambourine or your favorite chant. We will get in a big old circle and just let the music flow. Vocal mikes will be available for chanting and rapping. Jewish topics encouraged, obviously… All ages welcome!

Davening (Praying) With Drums

Ritual and Prayer

Drums seem to be everywhere that Jews pray. But which rhythms work with which prayers? Which sounds deepen Holiness? When to be silent? How to connect the drumming with HaShem (God) and still be supportive to others? Join master drummer AkivaTheBeliever and deepen your own Holy Drumming. Beginners welcome.
