Abraham, Man of Doubt
Global History and Culture,
Identity and Responsibility,
Text and Thought
We are presented with Abraham as the archetypal ‘man of faith,’ ready to follow God wherever he should be commanded. I do not know about you, but if that is the case, I do not find him much of a role model! ‘Sacrifice your son? Right away, sir!’ I do not think so! Instead we will look closely at the Torah to see Abraham’s unfolding understanding of God and discover, for our age, his truly unique insight and how he struggled towards it.

No idea what we're talking about? Then you'd better come witness it for yourself at this off-the-cuff, improvisational, comedy session from some of Limmud NY 2008's bravest and finest.
Proud of Our History?
What Shall We Do with Jacob?
Identity and Responsibility,
Text and Thought
For Jews who want to be proud of their ancestors, Jacob is a bit of an embarrassment. He appears to be a soppy, tricky, mummy’s boy, lacking any kind of moral fiber or perspective. Actually, look a little closer at the text, and you may be forgiven for thinking that many Jews now model themselves on the much maligned Esau instead. We will try to reclaim Jacob and rehabilitate him since—let’s face it—we are all named after him anyway!
