Basmat Hazan Arnoff

Basmat Hazan Arnoff has taught Jewish text widely on all levels, having served on the faculty of institutions including the Skirball Center for Adult Jewish Learning, the Brandeis Collegiate Institute, as well as Kolot and Elul, both based in Israel. Her Hebrew novel, “Mayyim Hafoochim” (Water Inside Out) was published by Kibbutz haMeuchad/Sifriat Poalim in 2006. Basmat also works as a theater director, winning the award for Best Ensemble in 2007 at the Akko Theater Festival for “LeShem Ichud” , an adaptation of David Grossman's novel, “See Under: Love”.

The Heart of Israel at 60: Israeli Film

The arts offer a detailed, unpredictable, colorful, and invaluable map for finding the heart of Israel at 60. In three sessions (attend 1, 2 or all 3), explore the social and cultural changes revealed by the people, work, and trends of today’s Hebrew arts and culture. Read, hear, and relate to gorgeous, hopeful, and troubling visions of Israel. All texts will be translated. No previous knowledge necessary. Watch, revisit, and discuss clips some of recent Israeli films focusing specifically on the role of women today. Award winning and groundbreaking films will include: “Broken Wings,” “Campfire,” “Aviya’s Summer,” “Late Marriage,” and “Ushpizin.” **Please note, these films will be screened as a part of this class exclusively.

The arts offer a detailed, unpredictable, colorful, and invaluable map for finding the heart of Israel at 60. In three sessions (attend 1, 2 or all 3), explore the social and cultural changes revealed by the people, work, and trends of today’s Hebrew arts and culture. Read, hear, and relate to gorgeous, hopeful, and troubling visions of Israel. All texts will be translated. No previous knowledge necessary. Through the biting and beautiful work of Hanoch Levine, one of Israel’s premier contemporary playwrights, read, react, and act out the themes of the constant tension between rebels and the bourgeois mainstream.

In three sessions (attend 1, 2 or all 3), explore the social and cultural changes revealed by the people, work, and trends of today’s Hebrew arts and culture. Read, hear, and relate to gorgeous, hopeful, and troubling visions of Israel. All texts will be translated. No previous knowledge necessary. Listen to samples of the arc of Israeli songs 1948-2008 focusing on trends and directions of each decade. How does the music relate to the historical and social events of its period? We will look carefully at the questions of the attitude towards war and the military, as well as the recent fascinating growth in the combinations by contemporary musicians – from homebred traditionalists to famous rock stars – of ancient Jewish texts and liturgical poetry with modern forms.
