Arna Poupko Fisher

Sunday 1:00 PM–2:15 PM Emerald Bay 2

Is it possible to create a list of "non-negotiable" core beliefs in a community that embraces religious pluralism? How does one identify a belief, which for Jews would be deemed "beyond the pale?" Is a Judaism without God authentic? What about Jews who believe in a false/failed messiah? By engaging in an open discussion about the nature of truth, personal faith and the role of religious struggle, this session will attempt to address the issue of Jewish beliefs.

FILM: A Sacred Duty

Lionel Friedberg, Joy Krauthammer

Sunday 1:00 PM–2:30 PM Presidential Suite 2

Arts & Performance, Global History and Culture, Identity & Responsibility

"A Sacred Duty: Applying Jewish Values To Help Heal The World" is the recently released, highly acclaimed documentary on current environmental threats and how Jewish teachings can be applied in responding to these threats. This film offers a Jewish response to the issues of global climate change, and animal-based agriculture’s contributions to this crisis. In the vein of "An Inconvenient Truth," the film reminds us that it is our sacred duty to become aware of these realities and our responsibility to apply Jewish teachings to how we obtain our food, use natural resources, and live among other creatures whom God created. It offers simple, practical measures for reducing our impact on the planet. (60 minutes – discussion on global responsibility to follow)

FILM: Disengaged from Reality

Ron Furman

Sunday 1:00 PM–2:25 PM Presidential Suite 1

Arts & Performance

This eye-opening documentary shines light on the recent year’s political controversies from the often-overlooked perspectives of Israel’s Arab community. Bittersweet and hopeful dialogues provide an opportunity to comment on how Israeli-Arabs view their position in Israeli society; helping to bridge the gap left by media sensationalism, illustrating how much of the ‘Arab Condition’ is due to a “victimizing occupation,” and how much is simply due to an “occupied” mentality. This film is not about the differences between Arabs and Jews, but about how democracy shapes a people living in an unsettled land, trying to walk the line between a national heritage and a cultural one. (97 minutes)
