Text and Thought
One of the classic tensions of intellectual life is the tension between increasing one's personal knowledge and one's communal moral duty to those in the community who have not reached such levels. Thus Maimonides interprets the story of Jacob's dream in which there is a ladder whose feet are on the earth but whose head is in the heavens. Should the intellectual who has reached the heavens be required also to descend the ladder? What are the gains and losses of the intellectual and of the community? This session is based on texts in Hebrew (with translations); discussion will be in both Hebrew and English.
Performing Shylock

Global History and Culture
The character of Shylock in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice often inspires great debate and controversy. Was he a villain or a human being? What is this character's purpose? Exploring Shylock’s villainy raises the question of anti-Semitism, and this concept needs to be addressed in performing the role. This session will be a workshop in performing the role of Shylock from an actor’s point of view. How do we communicate the language of Shakespeare in the 21st century, and make it accessible to ourselves and modern audiences? Through a series of acting exercises and analysis, we will explore how to bring Shakespeare’s words to life in a modern context.

What motivates Jewish filmmakers to write, produce and direct documentaries and fictional films? How do they deal with the illusion of authenticity in filmmaking? How to they manipulate---or avoid manipulating--their audiences? Why are some drawn to document history, while others to fictional subjects? Do they exploit their own life experience for material? Listen, learn and ask your own questions of six of the filmmakers who are presenting their works at LimmudLA.
With Suzannah Warlick, Gabriela Bohm, Sharon Rennert, Ethan Isenberg, Sal Litvak and Pazit Lichtman, all of whom are showing films at LimmudLA, moderated by Pamela Weisberger
