Marissa Sharpe

Marissa Sharpe, MAEd, is the Director of Education at Congregation Tikvat Jacob in Manhattan Beach, California. She oversees the synagogue's Preschool, Religious School, and Adult education program. Marissa also serves as Co-Chair of the Religious School Principal's Council. She has a Bachelors degree in business-Economics from UCLA and a Masters in education and a Bachelors in Hebrew letters from the American Jewish University. Prior to working in Jewish education, Marissa lived in Israel for over thirteen years and served in the Israeli military. Upon her return to California she worked in the finance industry and eventually as a Jewish educator. Marissa was awarded both the LA-BJE's Smotrich Family Foundation Award and JESNA's Grinspoon- Steinhardt Award for Excellence in Jewish Education in 2006. She has also worked for several Religious Schools in the Los Angeles area, including Temple Beth Hillel, Wilshire Boulevard Temple, Shomrei Torah, Temple Aliyah and Kehilat Maarav. Some of Marissa's expertise are Israel education, Conversational Hebrew and Family Education programs.

News reports from the Middle East often contain distorted or misleading information. This session explores the factors that contribute to biased or inaccurate reporting about the Arab-Israeli conflict. Participants will be presented with the concepts and skills necessary for being critical consumers of the media, and a hands-on exercise examining recent media clips from the region will be discussed. Note: this session is for teens only.
