Lior Kaminetsky, international artist and journalist, has been featured in festivals and concert halls around Israel, Europe, Africa, and the US, including Lincoln Center Theater in NY. Currently, Lior serves as a writer for Yedioth America newspaper (the “Fiddler On The Page” column), and is studying for a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at USC. Lior, 7th generation Jerusalemite, was born to a traditional and musical family. He served as a Medic in the IDF as part of a Hesder/Yeshiva program and earned a teaching certificate in Jewish Philosophy and Jewish Oral studies at the Herzog Institute at the Har Etzion Yeshiva. Lior has a wide ranging repertoire that includes classical music and Jewish music, as well as Klezmer and is known for his contribution to the music education field in the LA community.

Lior Kaminetsky was sent by an Israeli organization named “Soul Train” to bring Judaism through the arts to the far-flung and small Jewish communities around the world, including various communities around South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. In this presentation, Lior will share his personal experience, combined with live music and videos, and group discussion.

In the last 2000 years, Jews have been moving around, establishing communities all over the world with old musical traditions, written down in unique notation ("trope"), some of which are ascribed to tunes sung at the Jerusalem Temple (960 BCE - 70 CE). In this presentation, Lior will revive an important piece for violin, based on the traditional Ashkenazi cantillation, and will discuss the following related issues: What happened to the Temple tunes? Is there original "Jewish music" or just a collection of environmental musical influences? What musical characteristics would build such music?
