City of Scars: Shalaam Center

Global History and Culture

Shalaam Center is a theoretical Israeli-Palestinian academic conference center and civic space in Jerualem that I designed for my Master's thesis design project. Shalaam is a contraction of shalom and salaam; both translate to 'peace' in their respective Hebrew and Arabic languages. In Jerusalem, how can architecture motivate people to gather in meaningful ways despite external barriers? I propose, through the design of the Shalaam Center, that urban revitalization can contribute to peace building initiatives, not occur merely as the end result.
