Between Genealogy and History

Family Stories from the Former Soviet Union

Sam Jonas, Bluma Palvanova, self, David Shneer

Jews usually think of Russia and the Soviet Union as a mythic place of violence and destruction. What happens when we look for details about our own families’ histories in these places? In this panel, we will hear two very personal stories from two individuals who searched for the details and the truth about their families’ Jewish past in the former Soviet Union. One presenter is a longtime Denver resident who heard stories of Russia from his grandmother that inspired a quest that took him halfway around the world. The other is a recent immigrant from Uzbekistan, whose family has its own story of fortitude in the face of tragedy. This session is in English with Russian translation available.
