The US, Israel, and the West Bank Settlements

Israel

This presentation traces the evolution of US policy toward Israel's West Bank settlements, with a focus on the issue in the context of recent US-Israeli relations. The viewpoint is that of Washington, with mention of the approach of every US administration since the end of the June 1967 Six Day War.

The Changing Landscape of American-Israeli Politics

Caryn Aviv, Center for Judaic Studies, University of Denver, Zach Levey, University of Colorado at Boulder, Bruce Shaffer

This workshop explores American-Israeli politics from three different perspectives in a panel format. First, Zach Levey will analyze the emerging relationship between the Obama Administration and the current Israeli government. Next, Caryn Aviv will survey how American Jews are 'changing the conversation' about their relationships to Israel through the emergence of non-profit educational and lobbying/advocacy organizations. Finally, we will hear from Bruce Shaffer, who will share his personal experiences and reflections about his participation in Encounter Programs, an educational group that brings Jews from around the world to Israel and the West Bank for dialogue with Palestinians.

Teaching About Israel on the American Campus

Israel

This presentation reviews the way Israel, as an academic topic, is taught, mis-taught, and most often, ignored on US campuses. We will consider in what manner Israel may be most effectively presented, with a view to imparting to students a full understanding of and sympathy for the subject. This presentation includes a demonstration of the audio-visual means that the instructor brings to the university classroom.
