In chapter 5, verse 25 of Pirket Avot, Yehuda ben Tema explores what ages are appropriate for different Jewish life cycle stages. Today we will look at that text, explore more relevant activities in our lives today, and when they should/do happen. Parents and students will first work in parallel. Then we will come together as a group, and compare our decisions. A lively discussion will ensue! This session is ideal for ages 8-12 and a parent.
Gender Trouble
Thinking Beyond Binaries
Gregg Drinkwater
Saturday 4:30 PM–5:45 PM
University Center 124
Was the first human a male? A female? Neither? Both? Were Abraham and Sarah challenged by more than just infertility? Together, we’ll explore the complexity of gender in the Book of Genesis and discuss the implications of looking at the Torah from a “queer” perspective. Can we use our sacred texts to expand our understanding of sexual and gender diversity? Come study with the co-editor of the forthcoming book “Torah Queeries” (NYU Press), inspired by the Web project: www.jewishmosaic.org/torah.

Nahman of Bratzlav teaches that the core of every human soul is home to ‘good points’ of loving kindness (hesed). Locating the ‘good points’ in others and oneself is a transformative act, while stringing them together is a musical and spiritual process all at once. This session is a text study.
