Burnt Feet, Snake Charm, and Satanic Lessons
Three Rabbinic Stories about Tzedakah
Steve Greenberg
Saturday 1:30 PM–2:45 PM
Gold Streak
The rabbis taught in the context of a living community. Their deliberations were made palpable by their ongoing interaction with people. The stories rabbis tell in the Talmud demonstrate, expand and sometimes resist their penchant for rules. With these three Talmudic legends, we discover not only the roots of their moral thinking but also their awareness that sometimes life can explode the very categories of our moral judgment.

Paper Plates: When Part of the Family Keeps Kosher
How Families Cope
Linda Loewenstein
Saturday 1:30 PM–2:45 PM
Sun Burst
Loewenstein's book, "Paper Plates: When Part of Your Family Keeps Kosher," is a nonjudgmental collection of essays/interviews with people confronting the problems that occur when some family members become observant. What compromises do people make? How do Jewish parents react when told (directly or indirectly) that their form of Judaism isn't good enough? Keeping kosher is not only about food but also about identity, power struggles and values. What can families do to assure that a return to tradition on the part of some does not, ironically, destroy the family ties that create tradition?

You do not need to attend session I - Textual Study of the Shema - though it will be helpful. You will never say the Shema again in the same way after this session!
